Mrs. Adefemi Abeke Taire

Mrs. Taire was born into the Daddy Elelede Williams family of Lafiaji Lagos some 68 years ago.

Having personally experienced essential government functions and processes in the Lagos State Civil Service before engaging the private sector in 1992, Mrs. Taire understands that government reform has no meaning unless it can create value for its key stakeholders – Citizens, residents and the electorate.

Mrs. Taire began her public service career, post-graduation from the University of Ibadan, in the service of the then Western State. Later, she transferred to the Lagos State Ministry of Education where the Administration of Governor L. K. Jakande appointed her Permanent Secretary in 1979. Remarkably, she served in such capacity at the Ministries of Health, Agriculture & Cooperatives, Employment & Civil Service Matters (Establishment), Office of the Head of Service, as well as the Departments of the Civil Service and the Cabinet & Higher Education.

On November 1 1988 she was appointed Secretary to the Military Government and de-facto Head of State Civil Service, the first female substantive holder of the office, and she served there until 31 December 1991, when she retired from the Lagos State Civil Service.

Since her retirement Mrs. Taire has held positions in the public service including:

  • Chairman, Caretaker Committee of the National Republican Convention (NRC), Lagos State (1992)
  • Member, State & Local Government Creation and Boundary Adjustment Committee, which submitted recommendations to the General Abacha Administration leading to the present 36-State plus F.C.T structure of Nigeria, and in particular, the creation of Bayelsa State, (1995-96)
  • Chairman, Board of Directors, Ibile Holdings Limited, the Lagos State Government Investment Company (1994-98)

Mrs. Taire is currently a member of the Governing Council of Bowen University (Private University of the Nigerian Baptist Convention) and Chairman, Governing Council of Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Lagos State.

She currently serves as non-executive Director of some private companies, including Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc.

A keen football fan, she also likes Reading, Gardening, Swimming and social concerns.
